It’s easy to drift in your walk with God without even realizing it. But staying connected to Him doesn’t have to be complicated.
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw brings it back to the basics—what it really looks like to stay close to God in a simple, consistent way.
Anchored in John 15:5, this devotional highlights the importance of staying connected to Jesus as the source of everything in your life.
Referencing Revelation 2:4–5, this episode also points to the call to return to your first love—not through pressure or performance, but through genuine relationship.
Whether it’s time in God’s Word, prayer, being part of a church, or simply staying intentional day by day, getting back to the basics is about reconnecting with the One who never moved.

You don't stay close to God by accident. It's built day by day in ways that seem small but aren't. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Not long ago, we talked about how easy it is to drift in our walk with God, you know, that slow fade that can happen over time. But here's the follow-up question. How do you keep that from happening in the first place? Because staying close to God isn't automatic, it's intentional. And not in a heavy, overwhelming way, but in a daily, consistent way. Jesus lays it out pretty clearly in John 15 5. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them will produce much fruit. For apart from me, you can do nothing. The key word there is remain. That's not something you do once in a while. It's something you live out every day. And here's where we can lose our footing, because we tend to think growth comes from big dramatic steps. But most of the time, it's built in the small things you do consistently, opening God's word, even if it's just a few verses. Talking to Him throughout your day, not just at set times. Keeping Him at the center when everything else is competing for your attention. Hey, even what you're doing right now, taking a few minutes to listen to something that points you back to God, that's a step in the right direction. It may seem simple, but it counts. And there's more to it than just what you do on your own. Being in church, actually showing up, being around other believers, that makes a difference. Watching online can help, but it's not the same. And I recognize that there are people who have to watch online for health reasons or whatever. That's totally okay. And getting connected in a Bible study or small group, that's where your faith gets stronger through real relationships. And none of this is about pressure. It's just about staying connected. Because if you don't build these things into your life, other things will take over without asking permission. And over time, you start to feel the distance. That's why Jesus didn't say visit me. He said remain. Stay close, stay connected, stay rooted. And when you look at Revelation 2, verses 4 and 5, where Jesus calls people back to their first love, it's a reminder that this has always been about relationship. So if you want to avoid that slow fade, this is where it happens. Not in big occasional efforts, but in daily intentional connection with him and with other believers. Simple, consistent, real. Lord, help us stay connected to you in our everyday lives, not just when it's convenient, but as a regular part of who we are. Keep us from getting distracted or pulled away by the things around us. Give us a desire to spend time with you, to talk with you, and to stay rooted in your word. Help us build a consistent walk with you that keeps us close. In Jesus' name, Amen. Take a step today. Keep the connection going. Follow the Faith Fuel with Bob Shaw podcast wherever you listen for daily encouragement rooted in Scripture. Until next time, peace and joy.
