“Pray without ceasing.” But what does that really mean?

In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw clears up a verse that can feel confusing at first. Looking at 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and Colossians 4:2, this devotional shows that prayer isn’t about constantly speaking—it’s about staying connected to God throughout your day.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re not praying enough or not doing it right, this episode will help you approach prayer in a simple, natural way.

Pray without ceasing. Does that mean what it sounds like it means? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Pray without ceasing. That's easy to read but harder to understand. It can sound a little unrealistic. Like, are we supposed to be praying every second of the day? Because life doesn't really work that way. You've got responsibilities, conversations, work, driving, all the normal things that fill up a day. So what does that verse actually mean? First Thessalonians 5 17, never stop praying. At first glance, that sounds like constant nonstop prayer. But that's not what this is talking about. This isn't about walking around with your head down, eyes closed, speaking prayers all day long. What it's really about is staying connected. It's about living with an awareness that God is right there with you, that you can turn to Him at any time, in any situation, for anything. Colossians 4 2 says, Devote yourselves to prayer. That word devote doesn't mean perfection, it means priority. It means you keep coming back to it. So instead of thinking, I need to be praying all the time, think of it this way. Prayer is something you return to throughout your day. Short conversations, quick thoughts, simple acknowledgments. Lord help me with this. Thank you for that. I need wisdom here. That's what this looks like in real life. It's not about doing more, it's about staying connected. God isn't measuring how long or how often you pray. He's inviting you into relationship. So if you've ever felt like you're not doing this right or not doing enough, you can let that go. This isn't about checking a box. It's about walking with God throughout your day. Lord, thank you that we can come to you at any time. Help us stay aware of your presence throughout our day. Teach us to turn to you naturally, not out of pressure, but out of relationship. And remind us that you're always near. In Jesus' name. Amen. A lot of people wrestle with this one more than they admit. Feel free to share it with someone who might need that clarity. And follow the Faith Fuel with Bob Shaw podcast wherever you listen for scripture based encouragement you can carry into your day. Until next time, peace and joy.
