Baptism is widely recognized in the Christian faith, but many still wonder what it really means and whether it’s required for salvation. In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw brings clarity to a topic that often causes confusion.

Ephesians 2:8–9 and Romans 6:3–4 show that salvation is by grace through faith, while baptism is an outward expression of that inward change. This devotional removes fear about “doing it right” and encourages believers to take this step with confidence and peace.

Baptism is important, but does it save you? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Baptism is one of the most recognized parts of the Christian faith, and at the same time, it's one of the most misunderstood. People ask questions like, Do I need to be baptized to be saved? What if I didn't do it the right way? Does it still count if it wasn't in a church? Those questions are more common than you might think. So let's clear it up. Ephesians 2 verses 8 and 9 says, God saved you by his grace when you believed, and you can't take credit for this. It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done. Salvation is a gift. It comes by grace through faith in Jesus. Not through works or religious steps, not even through baptism. Baptism is not what saves you, but it is important. Romans 6 verses 3 and 4 explains it this way. When we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death. Just as Christ was raised from the dead, we also may live new lives. Baptism is a picture. It shows what has already happened on the inside. When you go under the water, it represents the old life being buried. When you come up, it represents new life in Christ. It's an outward expression of an inward change. And it's a step of obedience. It's you saying, I belong to Jesus and I'm following him. So now that that's cleared up, what about the way it's done? Some people get baptized in a church, some in the ocean, Jesus Revolution style, some in a pool, and yes, even a hot tub, like me. The setting isn't what gives baptism its meaning. What matters is what it represents a heart that has placed faith in Christ. So if you've ever wondered, did I do it the right way? Don't get stuck there. The focus isn't perfection, it's obedience. And if you've never been baptized or you've been putting it off, you don't have to overthink it. It's simply the next step of following Jesus. Not to earn his approval, but because you already have it. Lord, thank you that salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus. Help us walk in obedience with confidence, not confusion or fear. For those who are ready to take this step, give them peace and clarity. In Jesus' name, Amen. If this cleared something up for you, pass it along to someone who might have the same question. And follow the Faith Fueled with Bob Shaw podcast wherever you listen for clear scripture based encouragement for everyday life. Until next time, peace and joy.
