Spiritual growth was never meant to happen in isolation.
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw explains how God often shapes faith through intentional relationships. Drawing from 2 Timothy 2:2, the devotional highlights three important roles in spiritual growth: a Paul who mentors you, a Barnabas who encourages you, and a Timothy you invest in.
Discipleship is the mission Jesus calls believers into, and it often begins through simple, faithful relationships.
Spiritual growth was never meant to happen alone. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. When someone comes to Christ, that's the beginning, not the finish line. Salvation is the starting point of a lifelong walk with Jesus. And growth doesn't happen by accident. It happens through people. 2 Timothy 2 2 says, You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. Paul invested in Timothy. Timothy was told to invest in others, and those people would pass it on again. That's how discipleship works. First, you need a Paul, someone spiritually mature who guides you and helps you grow. You also need a Barnabas, someone alongside you, a peer, who encourages you and strengthens your faith. Acts 9 tells us Barnabas stood with Paul when others were hesitant to trust him. And finally, you need a Timothy, someone you're helping, someone you're investing in, someone who benefits from what God has already taught you. Think about large evangelistic gatherings like the Harvest Crusade with Pastor Greg Laurie. When thousands respond to the gospel, man, it's powerful. But the work doesn't stop when someone raises a hand. There are teams ready to pray with them. They're connected with local churches, they're given resources, they're encouraged to get grounded in Scripture. Follow-up happens because the goal isn't just a moment, it's a lifelong walk. Jesus didn't say, Go save people. He said, Go and make disciples. Salvation is God's work. Discipleship is the mission he calls us into. God is the one who saves, but he uses relationships to help people grow. No one is too new to be encouraged. No one is too mature to need guidance. And no one is so inexperienced that they can't begin investing in someone else in some way. You may not preach to thousands, but you can encourage one person. You can learn from someone ahead of you. You can walk alongside someone at your level, and you can help someone just starting out. That's how faith multiplies. Lord, thank you for the people who have poured into our lives. Show us who we need to learn from, who we can stand beside, and who we can begin helping. Use our relationships to strengthen faith and build lasting growth. In Jesus' name, Amen. If today's reminder encouraged you, consider passing it along to someone who could use it.
