Many believers wrestle with the same question: if God hears our prayers, why do some requests seem unanswered?

In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw walks through 1 John 5:14–15 and explains how God truly does answer every prayer — though His answers are not always the “yes” we expect. Sometimes the answer is no, sometimes it’s not yet, and sometimes it unfolds differently than we imagined.

Even when outcomes are unclear, believers can trust that every prayer is heard and that God responds with wisdom, love, and eternal perspective.

It can feel confusing when your prayers don't seem to change anything. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. We've all been there. You pray, you ask sincerely, you wait, and nothing seems to move. It can leave you wondering whether God heard you at all. Well, thank the Lord for Scripture because it gives us clarity and reassurance. First John 5, verses 14 and 15 says, And we are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him. And since we know He hears us when we make our requests, we also know that He will give us what we ask for. Now, at first glance, someone might read this and think, See, He gives us exactly what we ask. But notice the earlier phrase, anything that pleases Him. John is anchoring our confidence in God's will. This isn't a blank check for whatever we want. It's assurance that when we pray in alignment with God's heart and purposes, He responds. So does God answer every prayer? Absolutely. But not every answer is yes. Sometimes the answer is no. The Apostle Paul asked three times for his thorn in the flesh to be removed. Instead, God told him, My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. Even Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane prayed, Father, if you're willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine. In both cases, the suffering wasn't removed, but the Father was still answering. Yeah, sometimes the answer is no, sometimes the answer is no for now, and sometimes the answer is different than we expected. And when God makes something clear, we have to be careful not to override him with our own plans. There's a temptation to lean on our own understanding, to push a door open that God has clearly kept closed, but forcing what God has declined rarely brings peace. God responds as a father, not a vending machine. He sees what we can't see. He knows what we don't know. He works with eternity in view. So if you've been praying and the outcome hasn't changed, don't assume God is silent. Unanswered does not mean unheard. God receives every prayer you bring to him. He responds in wisdom, even when the answer looks different than you expected. You can trust that he's working, even when you don't yet see how. Father, thank you that you hear every prayer that we bring to you. Help us trust your wisdom when the answer isn't what we hope for. Give us patience when the answer is not yet. Guard our hearts from running ahead of you. We trust that you're working in ways that we may not yet see. In Jesus' name. Amen. If this encouraged you, share it with someone who may need that reminder. And follow the Faith Fuel with Bob Shaw podcast wherever you listen for everyday encouragement rooted in Scripture. Until next time, peace and joy.
