“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” That phrase in Philippians 2:12 can sound intimidating if it’s misunderstood.
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw explains the difference between working for salvation and working out salvation. Scripture makes it clear that salvation is a gift of grace through Christ, not something we earn through effort.
When believers grow in obedience, they’re not trying to achieve God’s love — they’re responding to a new life already placed within them.
What does it really mean to work out your salvation? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Philippians 2.12 includes a phrase that can sound a little intimidating at first. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. If you read that quickly, it might sound like salvation depends on your effort, like you have to keep proving yourself to God. But that's not what Paul is saying. Let's look at it carefully. Philippians 2.12 says, Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. Notice the wording? Show the results. Paul isn't telling believers to earn salvation, he's describing what flows out of salvation that's already been given. There's a big difference between working for salvation and working out salvation. Working for it would mean trying to achieve what Jesus already accomplished. Working it out means letting what God has done inside you begin to shape how you live. And the very next verse makes this even clearer. Philippians 2.13 says, For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. And here's the encouragement in that. The desire to grow doesn't originate with you alone, and the strength to obey doesn't either. When you care about honoring God, when you want to respond differently than you used to, that's evidence he's already at work in you. You're not generating spiritual life, you're responding to it. Alright, so what about fear and trembling? Well, it's not anxiety about losing salvation. It's reverence, it's humility. It's taking seriously the grace you've received. It's recognizing that what God has done in you is sacred and responding sincerely. If you ever feel like you're not doing enough, remember this. You're not trying to earn salvation, you're living from it. And the fact that you care about growth at all is evidence that God is already working in you. Lord, thank you that salvation is a gift secured through Christ. Help us live out what you've already placed within us. Give us humility and reverence as you continue working in us. We trust that you're shaping us day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.
